    Description

    1883 Hawaii Dollar
    Attractively Toned, Near-Gem Kalakaua Issue

1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS64 NGC. CAC. An attractive near-Gem example of the King Kalakaua I dollar, designed by Charles Barber and struck at the San Francisco Mint. The progressive King Kalakaua sought to create a stable form of currency for the island chain after taking power. When Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900, the coins' legal tender status was revoked. Most were withdrawn and melted (especially the dollar, with its high silver content).

This example displays lovely forest-green toning with orange-gold and royal-blue accents. Mint luster gleams beneath the toning. Fully struck and well-preserved, the coin shows only a few tiny abrasions on the smooth, lustrous fields and motifs. The eye appeal of the CAC-approved dollar is excellent. Certified in a prior generation holder. Census: 14 in 64, 19 finer (10/14). (NGC ID# 2TGD, PCGS# 10995)
