Description

    Scarce 1883 Hawaii Dollar, MS64

1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS64 NGC. When Hawaii became a U.S. Territory in 1900, the Treasury decreed that the Islands use United States coins of the normal denominations and designs. In this regard, Walter Breen, in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins: "Accordingly, orders went out to banks and other establishments in the Islands, ordering withdrawal of all the 1883 Hawaiian coins (struck by the U.S. for Hawaii in that year) from circulation; as soon as any were deposited, they were to be shipped back to the mainland for melting. This made the Dala (an example of which appears in this lot) a scarce coin, especially in choice condition ... ." Breen further indicates that of the original 500,000 dalas, or dollars, minted, 453,622 pieces were melted. NGC and PCGS have certified a few hundred of these coins in all grades, about 120 of which are Mint State (3/07).
The near-Gem specimen offered here displays dazzling luster, and just the barest hint of golden-tan color at the margins, as well as a faint reddish-tan streak across the upper obverse. A well executed strike brings out sharp definition on the design features, including the intricacies in the king's hair and beard and those in the reverse central device. A few light marks and luster grazes preclude a higher grade. Census: 15 in 64, 18 finer (3/07). (NGC ID# 2TGD, PCGS# 10995)
