    Description

    1883 Hawaii Dollar, Flashy MS65
    Exceptional Eye Appeal

1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS65 PCGS. CAC. The forward-thinking King Kalakaua I of Hawaii spent much time and energy trying to introduce a viable form of currency for the Hawaiian Islands, but his early efforts prior were not accepted by the island populace. Later, with design assistance of Charles E. Barber, a viable form of coinage was introduced in 1883 with moderate success until the islands became a Territory of the United States in 1900, and the coinage was recalled for melting.

The Akahi Dala is the most enduring legacy of the King's ambitious efforts -- even though more than 90% of the original 500,000-piece mintage was eventually melted. With many surviving Hawaii dollars either circulated, damaged or impaired, Gem examples are popular but seldom available. This exceptional example looks Mint-fresh with satin-smooth surfaces and flashy silver luster. The sharply struck central devices are frost-white and fully detailed. Faint golden toning is deeper at the margins, although the overall impression of the coin is one of natural brilliance. Only a few minor contacts prevent an even higher grade. CAC endorsed and attractive. Population: 14 in 65 (1 in 65+), 6 finer (9/15). (NGC ID# 2TGD, PCGS# 10995)
