    1883 Hawaii Dollar, PR63 Cameo
    One Finer Cameo at PCGS

1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar PR63 Cameo PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii coins feature a handsome portrait of a bearded King Kalakaua I, who was also known as David Kalakaua. He was sometimes called "The Merrie Monarch" and reigning from 1874 until his death in 1891. Among his most lasting contributions was the construction of Hawaii's Iolani Palace for the sum of $300,000, an unheard-of expense at the time. The beautiful palace stands today in Honolulu, the only royal palace on American shores.

The great majority of the Kingdom of Hawaii coinage seen at Heritage or any other auction company is coins struck for circulation, usually the four 1883-dated silver denominations: dime, quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar. The quarter, in particular, is relatively available in high grades, PCGS alone having seen more than 1,800 submissions from MS60 through MS67+. Examples are plentiful even up to Gem condition, with the PCGS population thinning out from there. Although the dime, half dollar, and silver dollar in MS65 are seen far less frequently, even in that grade PCGS shows at least 10 submissions for each denomination.

The proof coins of Hawaii dated 1883, however, are great rarities. Only 26 examples of each denomination were reportedly struck (20 of the pattern-only one-eighth dollar). This PR63 Cameo PCGS example is one of two proof 1883 Hawaiian silver dollars that Heritage is privileged to offer in the current Platinum Night session.

The present PR63 Cameo PCGS-certified silver dollar is one of only 11 certified in all grades combined at PCGS. Cameo submissions are three, one each in PR62, PR63 (this piece), and PR64 (3/14). The surfaces on each side show attractive dusky orange-gold patina with the expected bold proof strike and only minor signs of contact, in the fields on each side and away from the focal points. A great-looking example of this largest Hawaiian proof denomination. (Variety PCGS# 415929, Base PCGS# 10997)
