    Attractive 1883 Hawaiian Dime, MS66
    The Famous Umi Keneta

1883 10C Hawaii Ten Cents MS66 PCGS. CAC. The 1883 one-year type Umi Keneta, or Hawaii one dime, had a reported mintage of 250,000 pieces, but a large number were likely melted when Hawaii became a Territory of the United States. Walter Breen writes in his Complete Encyclopedia that the U.S. Treasury at that time decided that the Islands should use American coins. As a result, orders went out to banks and commercial establishments in the Islands ordering withdrawal of all 1883 Hawaiian coins from circulation.
Soft luster resides on both sides of this Premium Gem example, each of which displays a delicate mix of gray, sky-blue, lavender, and yellow-gold patina. A well executed strike leaves virtually complete definition on the design elements. Nicely preserved throughout. Population: 10 in 66, 0 finer (2/09). (NGC ID# 2C54, PCGS# 10979)
