1883 Hawaii Eighth Dollar Pattern, PR63
Only 20 Pieces Struck in Silver

1883 12.5C Hawaii Eighth Dollar PR63 Cameo PCGS. CAC. KM-4, Medcalf-Russell 2CS-2, R.7. Only 20 of these one-eighth dollar patterns were struck in silver. Other examples were minted in platinum (unique), gold, copper, and nickel. Gould and Bressett write in the 1961 edition of Hawaiian Coins, Tokens and Paper Money: "The pattern '1/8 dollar' was designed by Charles Barber, upon the application of the Hawaiian Government. The denomination of one-eighth of a dollar was subsequently dropped and the U.S. standard of one dime substituted."

This Select proof displays light golden border toning, leaving much of each side brilliant and allowing for an enhanced, if undesignated cameo effect. A thick layer of mint frost coats the devices, which stand out markedly against the deeply reflective and glassy fields. Small grazes and a contact mark below the W in HAPAWALU define the technical grade for this Hawaiian rarity. Opportunities to acquire these pieces should not be missed. Population: 5 in 63, 2 finer (10/18). (NGC ID# 2C56, PCGS# 10985)
