    Description

Extremely Rare Wailuku Female Seminary Scrip

An extremely rare pair of (1844) Wailuku Female Seminary Scrip, 2PE-5 (M-F 4A) and 2PE-6 (M-F 4Aa), the former Uncirculated and the latter, bearing the counterstamp "Edward Bailey" in black ink, Extremely Fine. These were issued by the Seminary, located in what is now the County Seat of Maui County, as temporary reimbursement for work provided until accumulated and later redeemed for "silver or goods," according to an 1897 letter written by Edward Bailey, who was principal of the Seminary from 1840 until 1849 when funding ran out. Bailey had come to the Islands in 1837 as a young missionary and later exhibited remarkable ability as a businessman in the sugar industry, as a government surveyor, as a botanist, and even as an artist. This landscape of the Bailey house was painted in 1885.
Both pieces of scrip are printed in vermilion ink on thin cardboard. Only seven of these were reportedly given to the Hawaii State Archives. The counterstamped piece, identifiable by a small stain along the lower third of the right margin, perfectly matches the Ruby Collection (Superior, 2/75) plate, lot 1485, where a quarter of a century ago it realized $725.
