    Description

1884 MS Kingdom of Hawaii Half Dollar Overstrike MS63 Uncertified. Gould-Bressett 83. 30.5 mm silver planchet, 15.6 grams. More than 20 percent heavier than the standard weight of 12.5 grams for Half Dollars. Die rust on the portrait of Kalakaua and elsewhere. Struck over a coin or medal of larger size and weight, with faint outlines of the host item detected under magnification. Based on the conclusive outline of a Columbian Half Dollar on the similarly-dated "Hapaha" just offered, could it be that a silver Columbian Exposition medal was used in the striking of this equally mysterious "Hapalua" piece? In any case, we suspect that both of these fascinating overstrikes were part of lot 2064 in "The Palace Collections of Egypt, " a 1954 Sotheby's sale that disposed of the massive holdings of former King Farouk.
