Description

    1887 Grove Ranch Plantation Token
    Kauai, Hawaii, 12 1/2 Cents
    MS62 Brown, Medcalf TE-17

1887 TOKEN Grove Ranch Plantation 12 1/2 Cents MS62 Brown PCGS. M. TE-17. The 1887 Grove Ranch Plantation bit ranks among the rarest 19th century Hawaiian token varieties. According to Medcalf, the Kauai plantation "covered 3,870 acres. In 1885 the plantation employed 110 men and produced 1,300 tons of sugar. 110 yoke oxen were used to provide the work power." One-bit tokens were struck dated 1886 and 1887, and the latter is rarer. The present piece is tied with one other for finest seen at PCGS (6/16). Die lines throughout the reverse field confirm Uncirculated status. The walnut-brown surfaces are unabraded and display minor laminations, as made. The centers are well struck while the borders show softness, typical for this blacksmith-made variety. Listed on page 421 of the 2017 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2UC3, PCGS# 600524)
