Description

A Gem Doubloon

Charles III Pretender gold Cob 2 Escudos ND (1700-1713) MS65 NGC, Santa Fe Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint, KM14.2, Cal-242 (for type), Fr-4a. 6.71 gm. Posthumous issue for Carlos II. Expertly struck and sharp, this piece is worthy of such high grade.

Often catalogued as a posthumous issue of Charles II, under the reign of Philip V, this piece was in fact struck under the influence of Charles III (the future Holy Roman Emperor, Charles VI), who reigned over parts of Spain during the 14-year war of succession that followed the death of Charles II. Charles III was accepted in Catalonia, where he stayed for 6 years, until the death of his brother Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor, compelled him to return to Vienna to be crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1711.
