    Description

Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1769/67 PN-J, Popayan mint, KM38.2, Fr-24, Onza-796, Restrepo-70.13, MS62 NGC. Fully mint state and close to the choice category, with much brilliance remaining with prooflike surfaces. Also well struck showing all details in the King's bust on the obverse and on the shield on the reverse.  The overdate very evident as seen on the coins struck from this pair of dies. The Popayan mint's series of Charles III 8 Escudos with the bust of previous King Ferdinand VI was struck between 1760 and 1771. That 12 year span is the longest among the transitional bust series of the Spanish Colonial mints and evidently the "rat nose" punches were never received in Popayan since the lower gold denominations struck between those dates also show the Ferdinand VI bust. The present transitional type is usually found is worn condition and Mint state examples are decidedly very rare: note that the specimen in the Millenia collection (Goldbergs 5/2008, lot 1020) was slabbed AU58 NGC and yet (correctly) elicited praising comments on its condition. The present specimen is clearly superior, and ranks amongst the very finest seen of this type by the cataloguer.
