Description

Nueva Granada silver Specimen Pattern 10 Reales 1849 SP65 PCGS, Popayan mint, KM-Pn25, Guttag-Unl., Fonrobert-8135, Restrepo-P68. Plain edge. A positively stunning representative of this exceedingly rare Colombian Pattern, presenting striking medallic reliefs rising in sharp contrast to the brilliant mirrored fields surrounding. Bathed in a pearl backlight from beneath stone-gray patination, the surfaces offer an endless treat for the eye, drawing the viewer in for closer examination of die polish and mottled cobalt hues hugging the raised design elements. Noticeably little evidence of handling can be found, confirming the offering's status as an indisputably Gem Specimen. Clearly outranking the Norweb example (also the plate piece in the Standard Catalog of World Coins) by a full grade point as well as in terms of its singular visual allure, and far nicer than the piece pictured by Restrepo, we can only anticipate the fervor of bidding activity this coin will elicit as it crosses the auction block.
