    Description

Pair of Republic white metal Obverse and Reverse Uniface Die Trials of 50 Centavos 1886 UNC, Bogota mint, Restrepo-311.5 var. (date), KM185 var. (date). A highly academically intriguing pair of trials struck from an unknown white metal. In documented records, the the young-head Liberty type was produced in 1886, after which the old-head variety was struck the following year in 1887. These two issues, struck on what appear to be very thin "test" flans, are clearly trial pieces, as they show the old-head design with a date of 1886, a whole year before the old-head design was officially produced. A truly curious if not somewhat mysterious set, each piece uncirculated with a crude reverse (as made) with only light handling on the lustrous struck faces.
