    Description

Royalist Cartagena cob 2 Reales 888/1813, Cartagena mint, KM-Unlisted, Restrepo-118, XF, 2.96 grams. An imitation cob 2 Reales with the fantasy date "888" clearly struck over a Cartagena KMD1 1813 2 Reales. Long thought by Colombian numismatists to be struck at Salazar de las Palmas following Rafael Fosalba's 1944 work, these are now attributed to Cartagena and struck by the royalists upon their entrance in that city in 1814, following Jorge Becerra's linkage of the punches and dies to pseudo-imitation cobs struck in silver of 2 and 4 Reales that are attributed to that mint.  It is thought that since the Cartagena Republican copper issues of 1/2 and 2 Reales showing the Indian under the tree could not simply be declared illegal (since they had circulated widely), the Royalists overstruck them with dies imitating cobs to deface their independentist designs (much in the manner of the Philippines Manila 1828-1830 countermarks). A charming testimony of the turbulent times of the Colombian was for Independence. Very scarce, more so with the date of the undercoin evident.
