    (1659) 4PENCE Lord Baltimore Fourpence VF35 PCGS. CAC. Hodder 1-A, W-1010, R.6. The smallest silver denomination struck for the colony of Maryland was the fourpence, or groat. The groats, like their larger fellows, bore the portrait of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and first Lord Proprietor of Maryland. All legends are sharp on the present pleasing, Choice example, which is free from any visible post-strike marks. A diagonal line on the shield was on the planchet prior to the strike. The shield shows softness at the centers. Dove-gray fields and motifs are bounded by rich peripheral apple-green and mauve toning. Population: 1 in 35, 5 finer (6/16).
