Description

Lord Baltimore Sixpence, Hodder 2-C, Fine 15
Cecil Calvert's Private Coinage

(1659) 6PENCE Lord Baltimore Sixpence Fine 15 PCGS. Hodder 2-C, W-1060, R.5. The sole accessible Lord Baltimore sixpence die pair, though still rare regardless of condition. Unlike the thriving and well-populated state Maryland is today, in 1659 it was a hardscrabble, albeit religiously tolerant colony that had yet to develop its plantation economy, and so few silver coins such as this sixpence were needed. The obverse is deeply toned blue-gray with a few long old cuts down through Calvert's hair. The reverse is significantly smoother and faintly luminous with similar coloration. Listed on page 40 of the 2014 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 15, 34 finer (1/14).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2U3K, PCGS# 33, Greysheet# 379)
