Description

(c. 1670) St. Patrick Halfpenny, AU50
Vlack 4-B, Outstanding Condition Rarity
Ex: Newcomer-Green-Ford

(1670-75) 1/2 P St. Patrick Halfpenny AU50 PCGS. Vlack 4-B, W-11540. Ex: Newcomer/Col. Green/Ford. The Vlack 4-B is a rare variety among the St. Patrick halfpennies, always in demand by specialists and virtually without peer at the About Uncirculated grade. Identified by Small Letters on the obverse and Large Letters on the reverse, King David kneels on a "checkerboard" pattern floor, some believe reminiscent of the device often seen on Renaissance-era paintings. Struck 5% or so off-center east on the obverse, the reverse shows better centering and the central motifs are sharp for a St. Patrick halfpenny.

This example lacks an obvious brass splasher, with just a trace of brassy-gold color in the upper-left junctions of the crown elements. Glossy surfaces show weakness of strike at FLO of FLOREAT similar to other Vlack 4-B examples, as well as loss of definition among the letters of REX. Corrosion is present at the obverse margins and scattered to a lesser extent across the obverse, while the reverse shows only minor pits and occasional roughness in sheltered areas. Attractive, dark chocolate-brown surfaces with a faint mahogany tinge appear smooth and hard in-hand. Listed on page 38 of the 2025 Guide Book.
