    Description

    St. Patrick Halfpenny, XF45
    Very Rare Vlack 4-E Variety

(1670-75) 1/2 P St. Patrick Halfpenny XF45 PCGS. Vlack 4-E, Breen-204, W-11540. This very rare St. Patrick halfpenny has small letters on both the obverse and reverse. These curious coppers are attributed to Mark Newby of Dublin who emigrated to New Jersey (then West Jersey) in 1681. Among other things, Newby brought a quantity of St. Patrick halfpennies and supposedly convinced the state legislature to accept the coins for small transactions. Research is ongoing as to the relationship and origin of the farthings and halfpennies. This chocolate-brown piece is smooth with strong devices. No brass insert plug is noted. A nice addition to any colonial assemblage. Listed on page 43 of the 2017 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 45, 1 finer (8/16).
