Description
(1670-1675) St. Patrick Farthing, XF45
W-11500
(1670-75) FARTH St. Patrick Farthing XF45 NGC. W-11500. The
St. Patrick farthing was probably struck in Ireland circa
1670-1675. A quantity of these coins was imported to New Jersey by
Mark Newby, and the West Jersey Legislature passed a bill making
them legal tender (as halfpence) for small transactions in 1682.
The present coin is a well detailed piece with glossy medium brown
surfaces, except for some light golden color around the crown on
the obverse. This interesting color is explained by a brass
splasher implanted in the copper planchet to produce this effect.
Listed on page 39 of the 2011 Guide Book. Census: 2 in 45, 3
finer (2/11).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# AUAR, PCGS# 42, Greysheet# 409)
