Description

(1670-75) St. Patrick Farthing, VF35
Rare Halo Variety, M. 1c.35-Ab.1
Ex: Spiro-Norweb-Martin

(1670-75) St. Patrick Farthing, Halo Reverse, M. 1c.35-Ab.1, VF35 PCGS. A halo or nimbus forms a circle around St. Patrick's miter. Breen (Encyclopedia #206) considered this variety to be extremely rare. No example appeared in the multitudinous Ford auctions. The variety is listed within a remarkable premium on page 38 of the 2024 Guide Book. This is a highly desirable Choice VF example with original chocolate-brown toning and no noticeable marks. The halo is bold and the brass splasher is perfectly centered. The surfaces are occasionally granular, and the reverse is misaligned several degrees toward 7 o'clock.
Ex: Jacob N. Spiro Collection (M.F. Schulman, 3/1955), lot 1427; Norweb Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 2340; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3951; Sydney F. Martin Collection (Stack's Bowers, 8/2022), lot 8166.
