Description

Circa 1675 St. Patrick Farthing, AU58
Martin 1b.1-Ba.1

(1670-75) St. Patrick Farthing, M. 1b.1-Ba.1, High R.6, AU58 PCGS. Like most or perhaps all die varieties of the St. Patrick farthings, the Martin 1b.1-Ba.1 is quite rare and seldom encountered in higher grades. The late Sydney F. Martin, whose book on the topic is unexcelled, acquired multiple examples of the variety, but none rivaling this near-Mint representative. Martin's best is PCGS certified as XF40.
This lovely example features sharp design definition, in the context of this type. Excellent light brown and steel-blue surfaces show slight planchet porosity. The brass splasher is bright and bold, covering most of the crown to the border above. PCGS Population for coin #42 (all St. Patrick varieties): 4 in 58, 2 finer (2/26). Listed on page 11 of the 2026 Guide Book.
