Sidewise 4 American Plantations Token
1/24 Part Real, Newman 8-C, AU55
(1688) TOKEN American Plantations 1/24 Part Real, Sidewise 4
AU55 PCGS. Newman 8-C, W-1175, R.7. The Sidewise 4 reverse was
used to produce both the Newman 3-C and 8-C coins, which both he
and Breen identify as originals made in the late 17th century.
Different die pairs (4-E and 5-D) were used later on to produce the
circa-1828 restrikes, which are considerably more available. These
tin tokens often show tin pest on the originals, as here, appearing
as light, pimply corrosion on both sides. The color is medium to
darker gray, with a couple of larger marks appearing like an
upside-down L in the obverse field. Population: 1 in 55, 2 finer
(both MS60). One of those MS60 pieces, a Newman 8-C, brought
$21,850 in our Long Beach Signature Auction (5/2008, lot 1829).
