Description
(1694) Carolina Elephant Token, VF20
W-12120, PROPRIETORS
(1694) 1/2 P Carolina Elephant Token, PROPRIETORS, VF20 PCGS.
Betts-79, Hodder 2-F, W-12120, R.6. Struck with the same die
used for W-12100, but the misspelled PROPRIETERS is corrected to
PROPRIETORS. Most Elephant tokens seen are of the LONDON variety.
Pieces employing the CAROLINA reverse are, in the words of Q. David
Bowers, "exceedingly elusive." The PROPRIETORS issue is the most
accessible non-LONDON Elephant tokens, but examples are nonetheless
rare. This midgrade piece displays pleasing detail on the obverse,
although slight weakness is noted in the central reverse. Deep
chocolate-brown patina covers each side, with only slight evidence
of granularity in portions of the fields. Listed on page 42 of the
2022 Guide Book. From The Warshaw Family Collection, Part IV.
