Description

Rare Elephant Halfpence in Mint State

(1694) TOKEN London Elephant Token, Thick Planchet MS61 Brown NGC. Breen-186. These Elephant Halfpence pieces are thought to have been struck around 1672 or perhaps as late as 1694 as noted on the NGC insert, shortly after the Great London Fire of 1666 and devastating outbreak of the Black Plague in 1665-6. The elephant shows a few pin lines in the field above, but is generally well struck on all but some of the higher points of the design. On the reverse there appear to be some minor rim bruises, but it is difficult to determine with the holder. A very scarce coin to find in full uncirculated condition, as few were saved and most show substantial wear. No spots or other problems worthy of note. Listed on page 31 of the 2005 Guide Book.(#55)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2U3A, PCGS# 55, Greysheet# 353)
