Description

Thick Planchet (1694) London Elephant Token
MS63 Brown

(1694) TOKEN London Elephant Token, Thick Planchet MS63 Brown PCGS. No Diagonals. Breen-186, Hodder 2-B, W-12040. An interesting and enigmatic series, these halfpence are believed to have been struck somewhere between 1672 and 1694. This is the more frequently encountered variant, and the surfaces show attractive brown coloration with a streaky, occasional overlay of darker brown. This is a well struck piece, but the lower obverse shows evidence of having been struck from a worn die, and there is a prominent carbon spot on the lower reverse. Listed on page 44 of the 2009 Guide Book. Population: 14 in 63 Brown, 5 finer (4/09).
