Description
(1781) Libertas Americana Medal, AU53
Betts-615, Commissioned by Franklin
(1781) Libertas Americana Medal, Bronze, AU53 NGC. Betts-615,
Loubat-14. The reference 100 Greatest American Medals and
Tokens ranks the famous Libertas Americana medal as the #1
American medal, notwithstanding its production at the Paris Mint.
Benjamin Franklin, then serving in Paris as an American diplomat to
France, commissioned renowned medallist Augustin Dupré to engrave a
medal celebrating the American Revolutionary War victories at
Saratoga and Yorktown. About 25 examples are known in silver, and
approximately 100 bronzed copper medals survive. The Paris Mint
continues to produce restrikes in various alloys and diameters, but
originals are 78 mm, and show an obverse die break near the edge at
7 o'clock. This is a pleasing olive-brown specimen with a hint of
granularity on Liberty's cheek.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# DRPN, PCGS# 151815, Greysheet# 200006)
