    (1781) Libertas Americana Medal, AU55
    Loubat-14, Betts-615

(1781) Libertas Americana Medal, Copper, AU55 NGC. Loubat-14, Betts-615. So influential was the design of the Libertas Americana medal, that even the defeated British aristocracy appreciated its artistry, if not its message. The obverse conveys a powerful image of Liberty in its elegant simplicity, while the reverse takes a pointed jab at the British and their defeats at Saratoga and Yorktown. The medal had a profound influence on the design of early U.S. coinage, inspiring Liberty Cap coinage.

Between 100 and 125 original copper medals exist, plus about two dozen pieces struck in silver. This is an original copper medal, briefly circulated, or carried as a pocket piece. The formerly reflective fields retain faint iridescence, amid light-blue and reddish-brown patina. Faint hairlines exist, with a few tiny marks and a minor obverse rim bump between 12 and 1 o'clock. Substantial eye appeal remains intact. Census: 3 in 55, 39 finer (2/20).
