Description

1727 Portuguese 6400 Reis, VF30
John Burger Hallmark

(1784) Portugal 1727 6400 Reis, John Burger Countermark VF30 NGC. 8 pennyweight, 22 grains, per the NGC insert. This gold "joe" was struck in Portugal (KM-221) but circulated in the early United States where it was valued by its gold content. The Philadelphia Mint struck its first gold coins in 1795, but prior to that time, large financial transactions required foreign gold coin. Such pieces were sometimes regulated by goldsmiths who would affix their hallmark to guarantee the gold value (of $8 U.S.). The present coin has a counterstamp by John Burger featuring his fancy monogram. The stamp is over the eye of Portuguese king John V and causes a bulge on the reverse southwest of the crown. The VF30 grade refers to the host coin. The counterstamp shows only a trace of wear. New York City silversmith John Burger resided at 207 Queen Street in 1786.
