Bar 'Cent' Copper, W-8520, XF Details
    Scarce Early American Type

(1785) COPPER Bar Copper -- Graffiti -- Genuine PCGS. XF Details. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4. Courtesy of a numismatically famous newspaper article in the New Jersey Gazette, collectors know that the Bar "cent" made its appearance in American commerce in 1785. The design imitates the buttons of Continental soldiers. The key authenticating diagnostic, a spur from the left end of the second bar, is present on this moderately circulated example. Mahogany-brown high points contrast with sea-green fields. Close inspection reveals numerous pinscratches. Listed on page 74 of the 2015 Guide Book.
