Description

Lovely (1785) Bar Copper, MS62 Brown

(1785) COPPER Bar Copper MS62 Brown PCGS. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4. Although little is known of the Bar "cents," it is thought that they were produced in England. The 1785 date associated with these pieces represents their first appearance in circulation in New York. The beauty of these pieces is their simplicity of design. The 13 bars represent the 13 states, while the interlocking letters USA conceptualize the unity of a young nation.
This lovely Bar copper has smooth medium brown surfaces with a few splashes of darker brown toning. The letters on the obverse and bars on the reverse tend toward olive-brown. Listed on page 70 of the 2010 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 62 Brown, 9 finer (2/10).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2B5J, PCGS# 599, GSID# 351)
