    (1790) Albany Church Penny, VG10
    Very Rare Early American Issue
    No D, W-8495

(1790) PENNY Albany Church Penny, No D, VG10 NGC. Breen-1169, W-8495, R.7. The Breen plate coin, one of approximately six pieces known when he wrote his Encyclopedia in 1988. As of 7/19, NGC and PCGS combined have certified nine pieces. The variety with a D (an abbreviation for penny) above CHURCH is equally rare. Per Breen, these church pennies were used as a proof of membership. The present piece is toned medium brown and has mildly granular surfaces. The few faint marks are inconsequential for the assigned grade. Uniface, as made. 1,000 tokens were issued by the First Presbyterian Church of Albany, New York, but they have a high attrition rate. Most Early American collectors have never seen an Albany Church penny, such is their rarity. Listed on page 77 of the 2020 Guide Book. Census: 1 in 10, 1 finer (7/19).
