Description

1652 Salmon 1-C Oak Tree Shilling, AU55
The Wurtzbach Plate Coin

1652 Oak Tree Shilling, ANDO, Noe-3, W-450, Salmon 1-C, R.6, AU55 PCGS. Ex: Ford. 73.1 grains per the Ford catalog. This lovely Choice AU Oak Tree shilling is an important type among those coins. Salmon 1-C is the sole varietal representative having NEW ENGLAND starting at 1:30 on the reverse. Medium antique silver-gray surfaces display all of the typical strike characteristics of the variety. The dies were improperly aligned with the obverse strike off center toward 2 o'clock, while the reverse is well centered as usual. A mint caused planchet fissure is noted on the reverse at the upper left. Listed on page 8 of the 2026 Guide Book.
Ex: Carl Wurtzbach; T. James Clarke; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 10/2005), lot 19.
