Rare Noe-15 Pine Tree Shilling, Pleasing VF35 Condition

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet VF35 PCGS. Noe-15. 66.4 grains. A die cutter's blunder made the lettering closer at the left and more widely spaced on the right side of the reverse. Well struck, the bold devices set this coin apart from most survivors "usually in low grades," as Breen notes. Richly and attractively toned.
The piece is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Walter Breen, when he was with the Institute of Numismatic Authenticators, dated 26 August 1965. The letter reads: "This certifies that I have examined the accompanying coin and that I unhesitatingly declare it a genuine example of the rare Noe 15=Crosby 24-N Pine Tree Shilling. This is the first of the small P.T. Shillings except for the unique blundered die MASASTHVSETS in the Eric Newman collection; the poorly spaced legends testify to engraver inexperience with the new type. (Close spacing at beginning of legends, unduly wide spacing at ends: note the A N. DO.)--The coin is a low Rarity 6 on the Sheldon scale, about two dozen in all being known or reported, and almost all of them in badly worn condition; the Noe Plate coin is not much sharper than this one. The weaknesses here being due to uneven striking. The rarity of the variety is explained by severe die breaks found on a few examples, implying early discard of the dies as useless."
