W-530 'Spiny Tree' 1652 Oak Tree Shilling
    Fine 12, Ephemera Included

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling Fine 12 NGC. Noe-14, W-530, Salmon 10-G, R.4. 69.1 gn. A well-worn example of this very scarce type, typically crude edges but great charm on charcoal, violet, and peach surfaces. Faintly luminous with few serious abrasions and interior figures mostly intact. Comes with papers that read: "Aunt Howe (age 78) gave me this Pine Tree [sic] shilling in 1864 or 1865." The unknown writer may be forgiven for the mistaken identity, as the Spiny (Oak) Tree does look remarkably like a Pine Tree device. Listed on page 39 of the 2013 Guide Book.
