Description

Very Rare Noe-10 Oak Tree Shilling
XF Details, Ex: Norweb Collection

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling--Genuine--PCGS. In-housed graded XF Details, Scratched, Tooled. Ex: Norweb. IN at bottom. Crosby 5a-E1, Noe-10, High R.6. 67.3 gn. The die break at EW in NEW helps distinguish between Noe-10 and the similar Noe-11 and Noe-12.
The present piece is discussed and plated in the classic Eric Newman reference, Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling (1959). Newman wrote: "an alteration of an Oak Tree shilling into a Pine Tree shilling is in the Norweb collection. ... The temptation existed for an unscrupulous person to take a weakly-struck [referring to the tree] specimen of Noe-10 and have an engraver 'improve it' by cutting a new tree on the surface of the coin. The specimen on Plate IV herein is the result."
In addition to the aforementioned alteration, an attempt has been made to smooth out a vertical scratch left of the date and denomination, and the tree has a pair of faint pinscratches. Both sides have full legends, and the golden-tan and dove-gray surfaces retain glimmers of luster. Listed on page 37 of the 2009 Guide Book.
Ex: Major Richard Lambert Collection (S.H. Chapman, 10/1910); Norweb Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 10/1987), lot 1167.
