    Rare Ghost Tree Shilling Noe-10

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling--Planchet Flaw--NCS. Fine Details. Noe-10, Crosby 6a-E1, High R.6. 66.9 grains. This variety is always seen with a very faint or non-existent tree in the center of the obverse, thus earning it the name "Delicate Tree" or "Ghost Tree" variety. For some unknown reason, the engraver failed to cut the tree deeply enough into the die. A ragged, short crack at 12 o'clock was caused by the pressure of the strike. Mint made clips on the sides create a somewhat square appearance. Subtle lime, gold, and lilac colors appear when rotated beneath a light. Sharpness of a higher grade in places, but wear is a bit uneven due to mint-made buckling. Listed on page 37 of the 2005 Guide Book.
