VF Large Planchet Pine Tree Shilling, Noe-11
1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet VF20 PCGS. Noe-11, Crosby 2a-A1, R.4. 68.7 grains. The "All N's Retrograde" variety, which demonstrates the inexperience of some of the Massachusetts silver die engravers. Interestingly, only the six N's are reversed. This piece has a generally bold tree, and most of the peripheral letters are clear. Rich dove-gray fields contrast with the lighter steel-gray design. A straightened bend between 11 o'clock and 1:30 affects the top of the tree, and a faint bend at 8 o'clock on the obverse causes uneven reverse wear.
