Description

1652 Pine Tree Shilling, MS61
Small Planchet, Noe-16

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet MS61 PCGS. Noe-16, W-835, Salmon 2-B, R.2. 72.8 gn. Trees were critically important to Colonial America, particularly for their use as lumber, which became a prime export. In addition to tree symbols appearing on colonial coinage, the emblems were also used on the flags of ships. It is not surprising the pine tree was among those used, as that symbol was strongly associated with New England.

Though unattributed on the holder, this surviving specimen of Massachusetts' early coinage is an example of the variety with the top of the tree on the obverse pointing to the outer left side of the S. The inner circle on the reverse is not symmetrical, coming to a slight point opposite the 1 in the date.

Both sides of this Mint State example display strong centering. The surfaces have a gray-tan appearance, with closer examination revealing hints of olive-green and rose. The strike is sharp overall, with minor incompleteness along portions of the outer right obverse along with minor softness of the tree. Listed on page 39 of the 2014 Guide Book.
