    Description

Lovely 1652 Pine Tree Shilling, XF45
    Small Planchet, Noe-16

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet XF45 NGC. Crosby 21-L, Noe-16, R.2. 68.0 grains, per NGC. A splendid deep silver-gray example, accompanied by hints of iridescence on both sides, with clear underlying mint luster. A remarkably well-centered example, with nearly complete borders on both sides. All of the peripheral legends are complete on both sides, a highly unusual occurrence. In 1966 Mayflower coins described this piece as: "Struck on a large round planchet. All features very bold with faint wear. This specimen almost as choice as the N-16 pictured in Noe and certainly must be among the finest. A handsome EF."
Mayflower Coin Auctions, Inc., was located at 40 Bromfield Street in Boston, Massachusetts, conducting 30 sales from 1956 to 1976. Operated by Maurice Gould, Manuel Lipson, and Joseph Lipson, the firm handled many important properties during their two decades in business. They are particularly known for the Emerson Gaylord Collection of gold coins, the Bradbury Thurlow sale of colonials, and the C.H. Stearns Collection of colonials.
Ex: C.H. Stearns (Mayflower Coin Auctions, 12/1966), lot 103; later, American Numismatic Rarities (9/2006), lot 11.
