Description

Stearns N.2-B Willow Tree Shilling

1652 Willow Tree Shilling Good 6 NGC. 67.2 grains. Noe 2-B, Cr. 2-B & C, Rarity-7. The B reverse is the rarest Willow Tree reverse. Interestingly, despite its rarity this variety is known in a wide range of grades. This piece is one of the lower graded examples, with other known pieces:

1. XF (essentially Uncirculated by condition, not sharpness); Ex: Elder Sale (5/11/35); Carl Wurtzbach, who priced it at $75; Ford XII (Stack's, 10/05), lot 7.
2. XF from Bower's 10/90.
3. XF. Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/02), lot 6, where it brought $80,500.
4. VF. Stearns Collection. Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/02), lot 7, where it brought $16,100. The present coin.
5. VF, Ex: Roper.

Grades on these pieces is subject to wide variability, as one can easily see from a glance at the above roster. Because of the method of manufacture and significant missing details on most specimens, the letters that do show, traces of mint luster (usually unlikely), and the significance one places on the bend in the coin from the rocker press are all factors that can influence how these pieces are graded. The present coin is a good case in point. Graded Very Fine in the Hain catalog, NGC sees the same piece as only Good 6!
The present piece is, nevertheless, a pleasing representative of the Willow Tree type (and the rare Noe-2-B variety). Seldom are these coins seen with central details, and that is the case with this piece with just the uppermost portion of the tree visible. However, significant peripheral lettering can be made out. On the obverse MA and VS show, and on the reverse one can make out A DOM NE EN LA D. The surfaces show even gray toning with light underlying blue patina.
