Description

1662 Oak Tree Twopence, MS63
Large 2, Noe-34, W-240, Salmon 1-B
Finest Known for the Variety

1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence, Large 2, MS63 NGC. Noe-34, W-240, Salmon 1-B, R.5. 12.6 grains. The Oak Tree twopence is the only denomination of its kind in the Massachusetts Colonial series. All examples are struck from a single pair of dies that underwent various alterations to the date over time. This piece, corresponding to Crosby 1-A1, Noe-34, and Salmon 1-B is a late state of the dies with a Large 2 recut from a previous Small 2 and a horizontal break left of the 1 through the beads to the W. Two of the finest examples of Noe-34 were sold in early 2015. We had the pleasure of handling the Norweb-Partrick representative in MS61 as part of our 2015 FUN Signature, while the Hain-Kendall coin in AU50 was sold by Stack's Bowers in March 2015. This MS63 representative deserves to be considered among those esteemed examples. Indeed, from a technical perspective it is finer. Although the obverse is slightly off-center toward 6:30 on the somewhat elongated flan, all the devices are clear and the strike is absolutely razor-sharp. The reverse is flawlessly centered and better-defined than either the Partrick or Kendall coins. Rich stone-gray patina with olive accents adorns each impeccably preserved side. Listed on page 50 of the 2019 Guide Book.
