Famous Colonial Rarity
1694 1/2 P Carolina Elephant Token, PROPRIETORS, VG10 PCGS. CAC.
Hodder 2-F, W-12120, R.6. London Elephant tokens, especially
W-12040, appear regularly in the marketplace, but Elephant tokens
with direct references to the American colonies are seldom seen.
The New England variety is uncollectible, and the two Carolina
varieties are famous colonial rarities. On the present piece, the
central reverse legends are well worn, but all words are at least
partly readable, including the PRO and ORS in PROPRIETORS. The O in
ORS is entered over an E, correcting the blundered legend of
W-12100. The pachyderm is surprisingly well defined, and no marks
are of any relevance. Listed on page 49 of the 2017 Guide
