    Description

    1723 Hibernia Halfpenny, MS64 Red
    Gorgeous M. 4.74-Gb.11 Specimen

1723 1/2 P Hibernia Halfpenny MS64 Red PCGS. M. 4.74-Gb.11, W-13120, R.4. Brilliant red surfaces with full satin luster on both sides, showing slight mellowing on the highpoints. Preserved with its full red mint luster for nearly 300 years, the survival of such a splendid specimen is nothing less than a numismatic miracle. The coins were produced by William Wood for circulation in Ireland, but controversy ensued, causing Wood to relinquish his patent. Some examples did circulate in America, though not due to distribution of the coins, but solely through informal means. Listed on page 45 of the 2014 Guide Book.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (May 2008), lot 2104, which realized $5,750.
