1723 Silver Hibernia Farthing, MS63
1723 FARTH Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver MS63 PCGS. CAC. M.
3.2-Bc.10, W-12500, R.5. The silver 1723 Hibernia farthings are
among the most sought-after and elusive varieties in the series,
existing in just enough numbers to be marginally obtainable for the
patient specialist. Considered to be patterns by some, the coins
are more accurately described as specimen strikings, though they
have been certified as Mint State and proof, as well. This piece is
from Martin's dies 3.2-Bc.10; the obverse die was also paired with
reverse Bb.1 and Bd.1, while the reverse was likewise also mated
with obverse 3.13, though this silver issue is by far the most
sought-after use of both dies. This example displays bold design
definition and beautiful semiprooflike mirroring in the fields.
Rich teal and amber-gold accents are seen periodically around the
borders while a faint blush of lavender-gray color warms each side,
most notably on the reverse. Overall, this is a highly attractive
example of this scarce silver farthing. Listed on page 44 of the
2015 Guide Book. Population: 10 in 63, 14 finer (6/14).
