Description

1723 Hibernia Silver Farthing, SP65
M. 3.2-Bc.10, DEI.GRATIA.REX

1723 FARTH Hibernia Pattern Farthing, Silver SP65 PCGS. M. 3.2-Bc.10, W-12500, R.5. The purpose of the silver 1723 Hibernia farthing is unknown. William Wood, the maker, had already secured his coinage patent the previous year. Perhaps he wanted a small stock of silver examples for gifts. The die combination is known only in silver, and a small cache of survivors emerged in Europe during the early 1970s. The present sharply struck Gem offers pleasing autumn-brown and navy-blue toning. Marks are confined to delicate contact on the king's neck. Listed on page 44 of the 2016 Guide Book.
