Description
1724 Hibernia Halfpenny Pattern, PR40
M. 9.2-P.1, Famous 'Neptune Reverse'
Only Four Examples Known
1724 1/2 P Hibernia Halfpenny Pattern, Neptune Reverse, M.
9.2-P.1, High R.7, PR40 PCGS. Ex: Appleton-Boyd-Ford, Sydney F.
Martin Collection. Deep mahogany fields contrast with walnut-brown
high points. A circulated but problem-free specimen of the
so-called Neptune Reverse pattern halfpence for the Hibernia
series. Just four examples are known; the others are respectively
pedigreed to Farouk-Norweb-Martin, Garrett-Roper, and Robison. The
presence of a trident explains the Neptune Reverse name. Sydney F.
Martin assigned the variety 9.2-P.1, die linking the obverse to
9.2-Nb.1, which has a more familiar Hibernia reverse motif. The
Neptune Reverse design dates at least to a 1628 pattern shilling by
Nicolas Briot, intended to honor the English Army and Navy.Ex: William Sumner Appleton Collection (Charles Steigerwalt, 5/1907), lot 734; F.C.C. Boyd; John J.
