Important 1724 Rosa Americana
Twopence Pattern, Martin 5-H
Extremely Rare European Discovery
1724 2PENCE Rosa Americana Pattern Twopence Genuine PCGS. Martin
5-H, Breen-99, W-1358, R.7. The PCGS number ending in .92
suggests Cleaning as a reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that
PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, the piece has
the details of an XF specimen that is corroded and cleaned. William
Wood's Rosa Americana coinage flourished (if such is the right
term) with issues dated 1722 and 1723; all later pieces, including
those dated 1724 and 1727, are thought patterns. This example fits none of the pedigrees listed in Martin's reference on Rosa Americana coinage; it is a previously unknown eighth specimen of the Martin 5-H, which has the letters "MA" just to the left of the division created by the portrait. This example from a European source has the classic "goiter" die break at the lower obverse. Moderately corroded surfaces have retoned orange and violet from a past cleaning, but the sophisticated early American coinage collector will be able to look past these surface faults and appreciate this important pattern for what it is. Listed on page 42 of the 2012 Guide Book.
