    Breen Plate 1740/39-MM Sou Marque

1740/39-M SOU M AU58 PCGS. Breen-521, Vlack-144a, extremely rare (Vlack R.8, unconfirmed). This variety remained unconfirmed by Robert Vlack when his book on the series was published last year, although this is somewhat surprising as it is illustrated in Breen and also in the 1995 M&G catalog. A product of the Toulouse Mint. This is the Breen plate coin in his Complete Encyclopedia, and the only one he had seen. Of course, it is not known how many of these may be residing unidentified in various collections, this is doubtless an extremely rare issue. Nearly full silvering with attractive pewter coloration. Deep olive toning on the high points represents slight traces of wear. Listed on page 51 of the 2006 Guide Book.
Ex: Ludwig T. Smith Collection (McCawley and Grellman, 1/1995), lot 45.
