    Description

    1773 Newman 23-R Halfpenny, MS63 Red
    Ex: Virgil Brand, New Netherlands

1773 1/2P Virginia Halfpenny, Period MS63 Red NGC. Newman 23-R, W-1565, R.4. Seven harp strings. The tops of the second and third I in III are distant, while the reverse has the V low and the second I touching the arms. A lovely example, much more red than brown and with few distractions, although somewhat softly struck in the center reverse. This piece's provenance includes a stay in the monumental collection of Chicago brewer-numismatist Virgil Brand, who amassed about 350,000 coins before his death in 1926. Listed on page 43 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB MS64.
Ex: Virgil Brand; later, New Netherlands (9/20/1954)
