Description
Lustrous 1776 Newman 1-C Continental Dollar, MS62
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter MS62 NGC. Newman 1-C, Hodder 1-A.3, Breen-1089, R.3. A late die state, this piece has the often seen internal cud over GI of FUGIO, with a break to the left, or downward, to the N and O of CONTINENTAL and on to the border, a break forming at the left base of N. Another break extends to the right, or upward, to NTA of the same word, forming a large cud at the base of NT. This piece is the same die state as the latest state Ford coin, lot 4 in Part One of that series, and the present coin is nicer in overall appearance. Ten different Continental dollars in the Ford sales represent one of the most significant offerings in recent memory. Even four pieces, as the present sale offers, is an extremely important opportunity for collectors. In addition to information found in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia and in the first Ford catalog, the principal references about the Continental dollars are by Eric Newman ("The 1776 Continental Currency Coinage," The Coin Collector's Journal, July-August 1952, pp. 1-9) and Michael Hodder (The Continental Currency Coinage of 1776," The American Numismatic Association Centennial Anthology, Wolfeboro, NH: Bowers and Merena, 1991, pp. 7-18). Writing in the Ford catalog, Hodder references his own variety data, but assumes the reader knows where to find his article, providing no biographical details.
A magnificent Mint State piece, the present example has brilliant pewter-gray surfaces with frosty luster and wispy splashes of deeper gray toning on each side. Although a few trivial surface marks reside on each side, there are no significant blemishes. This highly desirable example is certainly to be enthusiastically contested when it crosses the auction block. Listed on page 81 of the 2009 Guide Book.
